In episode 14, Koyuki is looking at some CDs in his bedroom. Two of the CDs have the words “Beat Crusaders,” printed on them, which is the group responsible for the OP of BECK, “Hit in the USA.”

In the initial airing of the first few episodes, the title screen is incorrectly spelled as “Mongorian Chop Squad.” This was fixed for later episodes and presumably the DVD release.

Many real world musical acts are referenced in the show. The closing credits feature Bob Marley and Kurt Cobain, as well as many other Japanese acts. In episode 4, the poster of the Rocket Boys is actually a picture of popular Swedish punk band the Hives. And in one episode, Koyuki is looking over a Dying Breed CD case, but the back cover of the CD is actually the back cover for Portishead’s live album, PNYC.

In episode 18 when we are first in the Marquee, the song in the background is the Beat Crusaders song, “Last Minute”.

Beck Episode 26 featured popular Japanese Rock Group The Pillows’ Sawao Yamanaka as a cameo character. Yamanaka’s in-series band, The Heroes (An obvious pun based on the katakana for “The Pillows”) even plays several Pillows songs.

In episode 8, when Koyuki talks about how the main character of a movie plays an opera in prison to give the convicts the feeling of freedom for a brief moment, the movie that he was talking about is called Shawshank Redemption.

In episode 17 when Koyuki gets his telecaster and plays it at home, he plays “Bombtrack” by Rage Against the Machine.

A few songs within Beck are covers of songs from Beat Crusaders (such as Gymnasium and Love Disorchard).

Kazuya Hirabayashi, who happens to play guitar for the J-Punk group, Husking Bee, does Koyuki’s singing voice.
